Econnect Solar Newcastle – Saving Money and Taking Back Control of Your Energy Usage

Thousands of Australian families are enjoying the benefits of home solar power systems. They are saving money and taking back control of their energy usage from the large private energy corporations.

Hexham, Northumberland-based econnect solar has received support from local network operator CE Electric to study the feasibility of green community energy being connected to its existing networks.

Solar Panels

Solar energy harnesses the power of sunlight to produce electricity. This renewable source of energy is a sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative to fossil fuels.

Solar panels (also called photovoltaic cells) convert the Sun’s light into electricity to power appliances, lights, electrical sockets and more. Multiple solar panels are wired together to form an array and are often referred to as a solar power system.

The most common types of PV solar panels are monocrystalline and polycrystalline. They have different efficiency and power capacity ratings, but both can perform well in most environments.

Monocrystalline and polycrystalline solar panels are made from silicon, which is a natural resource. This is found in beach sand, which means that building a solar panel is a bit like building a sand castle. It is also the second most abundant element on earth. The solar cells in PV solar panels convert DC electricity into AC (alternating current) electricity. This energy can then be used to power household appliances and lighting or, in the case of a grid-tied PV system, to feed back into the grid.

Solar Battery Storage

The right solar energy battery system is a key component to your home’s power generation system, providing critical backup power and reducing your reliance on the grid. Choosing the right battery for your solar system involves understanding capacity, functionality, cost, and technical specifications that align with your personal energy goals.

Solar battery storage systems seamlessly integrate with your solar panels, capturing and storing excess energy for use at night or during outages. This reduces your reliance on the grid and can protect you against potential future electricity price increases and spike pricing.

There are many benefits of integrating solar battery storage into your home. These include power savings from your solar system during peak rate times, increased energy independence, and back-up power for critical appliances during outages. A solar energy battery storage also supports environmental stewardship by lowering your carbon footprint and avoiding the purchase of fossil fuels. Solar battery systems are safe around your children and don’t produce any noise or fumes like generators.

Solar Hot Water

The best way to get solar hot water is with a close-coupled system that features both solar collectors on your roof and a thermally efficient storage tank. Heated water is drawn from the bottom of your storage cylinder and naturally rises through solar collectors to the top, heating the water on demand while you shower or run other appliances.

A heat exchanger in the tank transfers the sun’s energy to your water supply, typically using coiled pipes filled with a special transfer fluid (usually a glycol solution) that stays isolated from the potable water and can be recycled when the system isn’t in use. Many systems come with electric or gas boosters for when the sun isn’t shining – these can be switched on during off-peak electricity tariffs for extra savings.

Solar hot water systems are also available as a timer and schedule option, which aims to heat your hot water during peak solar production hours to minimise your grid consumption. However, this does require a ‘controlled load’ electricity tariff and either a ‘booster switch’ or’solar diverter’ (depending on your setup).

Solar Lighting

Solar lights harness the sun’s power to illuminate your home’s exterior and outdoor entertainment areas. Light a pathway to your front door with solar deck lighting, keep guests safe on a dark set of stairs with bright LED solar step lights or add a subtle glow to the top of your garden bed with solar post lights. Lowe’s also carries solar versions of patio lights, driveway lights and string lights so you can keep your landscape lit while keeping your energy use low.

In 2023, His Honour Justice Derrington of the Federal Court ordered civil penalties against E Connect Solar & Electrical Pty Ltd (in liquidation) and 2 directors – both current and former – for deliberately flouting the Renewable Energy (Electricity) Act. Justice Derrington found that the company and the directors provided false information about the accredited installers who completed 38 solar PV installations in late 2019 and early 2020, which was relied upon by a person acting as a renewable energy certificate agent to improperly create Small-scale Technology Certificates in the SRES Registry.
